Katie Holmes spoke about going into a “new phase” in her life, just six weeks before filing for divorce from husband Tom Cruise.

The 33-year-old, who shot to fame on Dawson’s Creek, made the comments during an interview with Elle magazine in mid-May, the Daily Mail reports.

“I definitely feel much more comfortable in my own skin. I feel sexier. I think in my 20s, it’s like you’re trying too hard to figure everything out,” the star said when asked about how it feels to be in her 30s.

She added: “I’m starting to come into my own. It’s like a new phase.”

Katie also appeared to react in a negative way when asked how it felt to be ‘Mrs Tom Cruise’, shrugging off the association as she told the magazine: “I know who I am and where I am and where I want to go, so I want to focus on that.”

Katie’s comments have now taken on a much more significant meaning following the news last week that she had filed for divorce from her husband of five years.

The star’s attorney Jonathan Wolfe confirmed that she had opted to end her marriage to the Mission Impossible star in a statement which read: ''This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family. Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest.''

Tom’s representative also released a statement which said: ''Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy.''

Katie is believed to have filed for divorce after becoming increasingly concerned about the level to which her daughter Suri would become involved in the scientology religion, which Tom is a devoted member of.

Since  the news emerged last Friday, both Katie and Tom - who used to be known as 'TomKat' during happier times - tried to continue with their normal lives.

Katie was spotted taking Suri to Sundaes & Cones in New York’s East Village earlier this week, no doubt in a bid to take the six-year-old child's mind off the split.

Batman Begins actress Katie also told a New York Daily News reporter: “'I'm alright. Thank you,” when asked how she is coping.

Tom meanwhile was snapped in LA sharing lunch with his adopted children with Nicole Kidman, Connor and Isabella.

The actor, who turned 50 on July 3, is believed to have cancelled plans for an elaborate A-list party in Iceland, where he was shooting scenes for his upcoming moving Oblivion, following news that Katie was divorcing him.
