One Direction forced to increase security after US fans mob the band

One Direction have been left shaken after excitable fans in the US got out of control and mobbed the boys, causing the group to beef up their security.

According to various reports today, Niall Horan and Liam Payne were pushed over as fans rushed to greet the five-piece, with the boys even having their hair pulled and clothes ripped from their bodies.

The incident is said to have taken place as Niall and Liam left their hotel on Sunday to grab some food, after a successful gig the night before.

With only one minder with them, the group of around 50-60 girls soon became too much to handle, and the boys were quickly overcome with excited fans.

A source told the Daily Record: “It was crazy. As they left the hotel on 54th Street this sea of girls completely engulfed them.

“Their security as desperately trying to keep them safe but they were completely surrounded.

“Liam got pushed over and Nialll was struck in the face. They had their hair pulled and Liam’s shirt got ripped.

“They couldn’t see where they were going and it was really, really dangerous. Police had to step in to get it under control.”

The boys appeared to express their shock at the incident on Sunday on social networking site Twitter, with Liam writing: “That wasn't even funny.”

Fans responded by expressing their sorrow at what had happened, including one called @NandosNCarrots who wrote: “I am so sorry that happened to you, some fans are just insane. Please don't let this affect your opinion of Americans.../:”

One Direction are now thought to have increased their security after the frightening experience.

The boys, who found fame in the 2010 series of X Factor, have gone on to carve out a hugely successful music career, and are extremely popular around the world.

Huge groups of fans follow the band wherever they go, with huge crowds appearing to see the band in France in February and in Glasgow during a visit there in January. Watch a video of their appearance in Glasgow in the player above.
