Gok Wan praises high street style champion Kate Middleton

Kate Middleton is often blasted as being “too safe” in her fashion choices, but style icon Gok Wan thinks the Duchess of Cambridge “looks great”, and has praised her influence on the industry.

Aunty Gok spoke to stv.tv during a recent visit to Glasgow, and said he’s a big fan of Kate’s – particularly because she champions the high street.

“I think she looks great, she looks fine. She has to be conservative. I think she’s brilliant for wearing the high street as well,” he told stv.tv’s Gill Harvey.

“A lot of people turn round and say ‘she looks too conservative’, but if she went out in a tracksuit to visit an orphanage I’m sure we’d all have something to say about it.”

Kate has become a huge figure in fashion ever since her engagement to Prince William was announced in November 2010.

The blue Issa dress Kate chose to wear for the announcement became a huge hit, with replicas flooding the high street as fans rushed to snap one up.

Since then the Duchess has caused waves in the industry through her fashion choices. A dress Kate chose to wear to a charity concert costing £69.99 from high street store Zara, sold out online in just one hour after the brunette beauty was snapped in it.

The Duchess can also work designer wear too, and recently received praise for choosing a striking teal Jenny Packham gown for a night out to mark the Olympics, which she teamed up with fabulous Jimmy Choo sandals.

So why does Kate has have such a huge influence on the public’s own fashion choices? Gok thinks it's because she's so visible and high profile. He said: “I think everybody in the public eye has a responsibility for people to look at them and think ‘actually I quite like your style’.

“Obviously there was a massive wedding, it’s the first time we’ve had a royal wedding in a long time, plus we know William is going to be our King at some point, therefore Kate will be our Queen, so they are bound to be noticed for what they’re wearing.”
