Today marks the first day of May, a month in which we all feel that little bit closer to summer, as the lighter mornings and nights come into play, and new life seems to be springing up all around.

In fact May is such a popular time of the year that it came out top in a ScotPulse poll of 1000 people who were asked their favourite month of the year, snatching 21 per cent of the vote.

There were various reasons why the fifth month of the year was listed as the best, but the overwhelming response focused on the fact that May tends to be the time of year when the winter chill disappears and the warmer weather finally begins to arrive.

Other popular responses included May being an uplifting time when new life, greenery, and beautiful blooms spring up everywhere, giving a ‘feel good vibe’ all around.

Generally Scots loved the fact that May tends to be free from annoying midges, with the pesky flying insects creating havoc in the later months for walkers, sunbathers and anyone else who likes to enjoy the great outdoors.

Others had more personal reasons, such as May being the month they celebrate their anniversary or are getting married in, or the month of their birthdays.

One person even said May is their favourite month because it’s the time of year the Eurovision Song Contest is staged!
