Kate Middleton is planning to give husband Prince William a very special 30th birthday present when he marks the big day this June – a beautiful painting of herself.

The art loving duchess, who studied history of art at St Andrew’s University, is believed to have been spending the last few weeks posing for the painting, which she will present to William for his milestone birthday.

Prince Charles – who is known to be very fond of his daughter-in-law – is believed to have commissioned the artist Nicky Philipps to capture Kate in the portrait, according to the Telegraph,

Charles will then give his son the very special painting, which is extra special as it will be the first portrait of the Duchess given to the Duke of Cambridge.

Clarence House didn’t confirm the stories, with a spokesman telling the paper: “We have private commissions happening from time to time, but we do not comment on them.”

But the artist herself – who has painted the only joint portrait of Prince William and his younger brother Prince Harry - didn’t rule out the idea of painting Kate, when asked last year.

“If they asked me, I wouldn’t turn it down in a million years, but beautiful people are always more difficult,” she said. “With symmetrical faces, there’s nothing to hang the portrait on. It’s very unlikely that you’ll ever do them enough justice.”

Tomorrow (March 15) Kate will accompany her father-in-law Prince Charles to the to Dulwich Picture Gallery for its Great Art Quest.

The appearance will be part of the Prince's Foundation for Children & the Arts which culturally benefits youths from deprived areas.

It’s just the latest royal visit Kate has made with her new in-laws while husband William is in the Falklands on duty with the RAF.

Last week she stepped out with the Queen and Prince Philip (the Duke of Edinburgh) for their first official Diamond Jubilee engagement in Leicester.

During William’s time in the Falklands, Kate has also made several solo visits to charities and organisations in Liverpool, as well as a visit to the Lucian Freud at the National Portrait Gallery in London.

The duchess recently admitted that she is missing William “terribly” during his six-week tour – so it’s good to see Kate’s new family are making sure to take her under their wing!
