Awards joy: Adele was big winner at prestigious ceremony Pic: PictureGroup/Rex Features
British singer Adele was the big winner on the night with six awards at the Grammys, as the music awards show paid sombre tribute to Whitney Houston who passed away at the weekend.
Stars at the ceremony included Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift – but all eyes were on Adele, who looked stunning in a black dress.
She collected awards including song and record ofthe year for Rolling in the Deep – and with six awards in total equalled Beyonce for the biggest amount of wins by a solo female artist in one year.
Adele also attained legendary status by becoming only the sixth artist to sweep all three major categories – song, record and album of the year. In doing so she joined the likes of Eric Clapton, Carole King and Paul Simon.
A tearful and triumphant Adele said it had been“the most life-changing year” while accepting the final award of the evening.
The next big winner behind her was Foo Fighters with four awards, then Kanye West with three including for best rap album for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, best rap performance for Otis and best rap/sung collaboration for All of the Lights.
Other winners at the ceremony in Los Angeles included Bon Iver, Skrillex and Taylor Swift. Jennifer Hudson sang I Will Always Love You at the start of the ceremony in a tribute to late singer Whitney Houston, who passed away at the weekend.
