We will always love you: heartbroken stars pay tribute to Whitney Houston

Following the news that Whitney Houston was found dead in her Beverly Hills hotel room on Saturday February 11, celebrities have taken to Twitter to express their shock and sadness at the death of the star.

Fellow singer Mariah Carey, who recorded award winning track When You Believe with Whitney in 1998, wrote: “Heartbroken and in tears over the shocking death of my friend, the incomparable Ms. Whitney Houston.”

She then said: “My heartfelt condolences to Whitney's family and to all her millions of fans throughout the world.

“She will never be forgotten as one of the greatest voices to ever grace the earth.”

Mariah's husband, Nick Cannon, added: “Tell our loved ones how much we love them while they're still here. I wish I could've told Whitney how great she was one last time.”

X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent judge Simon Cowell, who had Whitney perform on the UK X Factor in 2009, Tweeted: “I am so sad to hear about Whitney. We have lost one of the greatest singers of all time.”

According to the Daily Mail, the music mogul also said that he was considering offering Whitney a role on the US X Factor.

He is reported as saying: “We were ironically going to meet on Monday and of course one of the names we were going to be talking about in that meeting as a possible mentor on the new series of X Factor was actually going to be Whitney Houston.

“I have no idea genuinely whether she really was that interested or whether she would have.

"Given the choice, I would have liked to have taken her under my wing as well, because she would have been the ultimate, ultimate mentor to any contestant coming on the show.”

Dolly Parton, who wrote Whitney's iconic hit I Will Always Love You, featured in movie the Bodyguard in which Whitney starred, said: “mine is only one of the millions of hearts broken over the death of Whitney Houston. I will always be grateful and in awe of the wonderful performance she did on my song and I can truly say from the bottom of my heart, "Whitney, I will always love you. You will be missed.""

Rihanna Tweeted: “'No words! Just tears #DearWhitney."

The singer then added that she was struggling to focus as she attended rehearsals for the Grammys. She wrote: “'I honestly can't think of anything else!!! Feels so strange being at the Grammy rehearsal right now!!”

She then went on to Tweet lyrics from some of Whitney’s most popular songs: “I have nothing, if I don't have you,” before adding the haunting line from My Love is Your Love, “If I should die this very day... Don't cry!!!”

Katy Perry echoed the sentiment of many, simply writing: “So devastating. We will always love you Whitney, R.I.P.”

Justin Bieber wrote:” just heard the news. so crazy. One of the GREATEST VOICES EVER just passed. RIP Whitney Houston. My prayers go out to her friends and family.”

Music legend Aretha Franklin, who was Whitney’s godmother, was clearly devastated by the news.

She said: “'I just can't talk about it now.  It's so stunning and unbelievable. I couldn't believe what I was reading coming across the TV screen.”

The 69 year old added: “My heart goes out to Cissy (Houston's mother), her daughter Bobbi Kris, her family and Bobby (Brown).”

Whitney’s publicist Kristen Foster is quoted by Reuters as confirming the news of the star’s death, saying: “unfortunately it is true.”

No further details have been released but sources told US celebrity website TMZ.com that a member of Whitney's entourage found her in her 4th-floor room at the Beverly Hilton hotel.

Paramedics were called and performed CPR but she was pronounced dead at approx. 3.55pm.

An investigation into the star’s death is believed to have begun but Beverly Hills Police Lt. Mark Rosen said that there are "no obvious signs of criminal intent.”
