Sir Paul McCartney has been honoured with the ultimate sign of showbiz success – being immortalised on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The Live and Let Die singer became the last of the Beatles to receive a star on the famous Los Angeles landmark yesterday (February 9), at the age of 69.

The legendary singer was delighted with the honour, and told the assembled crowds that when he first started out as a musician he could never have imagined one day he would have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

”That was like an impossible thing to happen. But here we are today, and it's happening.”

Paying tribute to his Beatles bandmates, he added: “But I couldn't have done it without, certainly, three boys - so I want to say thanks to those guys, John, George and Ringo."

Paul’s star – the 2,460th on the famous stretch – sits alongside those his his fellow Beatles, Ringo Starr and the late George Harrison and John Lennon, in front of the Capital Records building on Vine Street in LA.

The first of the Beatles to receive a star was John Lennon, who was honoured in 1988, almost eight years after his death. George Harrison’s followed in 2009 again nearly eight years after he died, while Starr’s came in 2010.

Rocker Neil Young helped to introduce Sir Paul, and paid tribute to the star, saying he is "at the top of his game."

"Like Charlie Chaplin was a great actor, that's how I look at Paul, he's at the top.

”And yet even with all of that craft that he has and his ability to put melodies and chords and feelings together, it's the soul that comes out of his music and everything that he does that makes me feel so good and so happy to be here with him and honour him today."

Proud new wife,Nancy Shevell, who Paul married in October 2011, watched from the audience, as did his son James. But the singer said that fellow Beatle Ringo Starr was unable to attend because he was “under the weather”.

He might be 69, but Sir Paul is showing no signs of bowing out of entertaining, releasing his latest album, Kisses on the Bottom, on Tuesday this week (February 7). He is also tipped to headline the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Concert in June this year.
