Kate Middleton is determined to keep as busy as possible while Prince William is away in the Falklands, as the duchess admitted she misses her husband terribly when he’s not around.

According to new! magazine, Kate poured her heart out to a wife of a marine-pilot last year, telling her: “I don’t know how you manage. I miss William so much when he goes away.

“He went once for four weeks and I missed him so much.”

This time William’s RAF deployment means the couple will be apart for six weeks, missing their first Valentine’s Day as husband and wife, but the duchess has a packed diary to ensure she’s not sitting around feeling lonely on the romantic day.

Kate is embarking on her first public solo engagements, today attending a viewing of the Lucian Freud Portraits exhibition at London’s National Portrait Gallery.

On February 14, she will head to Liverpool to visit two charities – The Brink, which is an alcohol-free bar, part of Action on Addiction, of which Kate’s a patron, and Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

She will spend time with families and staff at the highly praised facility, which aims to offer a ‘home from home’ for seriously ill children and their parents.

Kate is expected to ‘cut the ribbon’ and officially open one of the new apartments.

A royal insider told new!: “With her husband away, it is a perfect opportunity for her to strike out on her own.”

Kate has been working closely with the Queen to prepare for her first solo ventures.

She is said to have gone to Buckingham Palace for ‘chats’ to help her understand the importance and protocol of royal engagements.

An insider told the Daily Mail: “The Queen has developed a great affection for Kate and wants her to feel fully supported.

“She knows how big a step carrying out official duties will be for Kate and has offered to have regular meetings to make sure she feels prepared.”

At home, the stunning duchess is being kept company by the new cocker spaniel pup she and William have fallen in love with.

Plenty to keep her busy then and William will be back in no time. Let’s hope he remembers to send a bunch of roses next week...
