Denise Welch is the latest star to receive offensive messages on Twitter, following her announcement on yesterday’s (February 6) Loose Women that she had split from husband Tim Healy.
Despite reassuring viewers that she and Benidorm star Tim are still friends and that they will continue to work together on charity ventures, some saw fit to criticise the Celebrity Big Brother winner on social networking sites.
The messages sent from one particular Twitter user are too disgraceful to print, but Denise was forced to respond: “Please stop being horrible to people you don't know. You'll be much happier x”
The 53 year old later warned the hater: “By the way, my work have reported you to the police and they've traced you. Have a good day.”
For all the criticism, Denise also received support for her honest approach to the end of her marriage and this morning she thanked her loyal fans for their kind words.
“Can't sleep after strange day! Thank you for your loyalty and love. Makes the haters easier to deal with xx,” she Tweeted.
Denise poured her heart out about the demise of her marriage on lunchtime show Loose Women, holding back tears as she explained: “The kids love us very much and they wanted me to do this today because if you do it via a newspaper or magazine, then they can put it into their own words, but they’re sick of me being annihilated for something, I’m not having an affair, we’re officially separated but we do love each other very much so I just want to say thank you.”
Denise’s friend and former Loose Women co-star Coleen Nolan today praised the way the actress had handled the situation, writing in her column in The Mirror: “I know why people are so torn about the way Denise announced it on Loose Women. Some people think it was wrong to be so public, but it was really brave of her. Everyone we know thought it was the right decision.”
Coleen added: “At the centre of it all, they really are great friends. And after all this is out they’ll make even better parents because they can go on to be happy in their own separate personal lives.”
Yesterday, Kylie Minogue also contacted the police after she was left disturbed by a “deluded weirdo” on Twitter.
Writing on her official page on the site, the pop princess told followers that she had been forced to take action.
She said: "I love 1,033,861 of you LOVERS, but 1 is not a lover, just a deluded weirdo making threats #andthatdoesnotmakeyouspecial SO..police alerted".
Natasha Giggs, Caroline Flack and Selena Gomez are amongst those who have also faced abuse on social networking sites.
Last night viewers saw former X Factor star Cher Lloyd break down on BBC’s Panorama as she spoke of her own horrific experience with cyber bullying.
She said: “I must get at least ten tweets a day saying I'm a dirty pikey. I think they know it's going to get to me, or because they know they can.
“There have been many times when I've cried myself to sleep. I'm very scared because I like to think people think I'm strong, because if they don't, then they might not think I can do it... Some days I wish that people would leave me alone for a bit and for there to be a hole to suck me in.”
