A-list stars turn heads on the red carpet at the Golden Globe Awards 2012

It’s the perfect chance to get dressed up to the nines, and the stars didn’t disappoint at last night’s 69th Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles.

The cream of the acting crop came out to play at the event – regarded by many as the pre-cursor to the Oscars – turning heads as they walked the red carpet.

Looking every inch the perfect Hollywood couple, George Clooney and his girlfriend, former wrestler Stacy Keibler attracted admiring glances as they arrived at the glitzy awards ceremony.

Dressed in an Armani tuxedo, George looked handsome and distinguished, with his stunning blonde girlfriend Stacy on his arm, dressed in an eye-catching red Valentino gown, which perfectly complemented her complexion.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt made another striking couple, with the actress dressed in a cream satin Versace gown finished off with a red trim, while Brad wore a three-piece tuxedo, and showed off his new shoulder-length hairstyle.

English rose Kate Winslet opted to remain true to her roots, picking an outfit from British designer Jenny Packham.

The satin black and cream dress perfect showed off Kate’s curves, with the cinched waistline helping to emphasise her hourglass figure.

Other stars turned heads for the wrong reasons. Meryl Streep – who won the coveted Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture (Drama) gong for The Iron Lady -  has been widely slammed for her ill-fitting black shirt dress, which many felt was too casual for such a glitzy occasion.

Tilda Swinton’s shiny blue Haider Ackermann ensemble also got mixed reviews. Speaking about her choice of outfit, the Scotland-based actress said she chose one of Ackermann’s gowns “because I love him”.

She added: “He is great friend of mine. We have such fun together building up these fantasies. He just delivered me to the red carpet. He is going to the airport to go back to Paris. I love him"

Some felt that Michelle Williams’ gown was a little on the heavy side for a red carpet event, and that it also aged the 31-year-old actress, who won gong for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture (Comedy Or Musical) for her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in My Week With Marilyn.

However the very reason her gown was criticised was the thing that attracted Michelle to her choice of dress, with the star commenting: "Its Jason Wu and I like it because I feel very warm. It's a little chilly today."
