The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are just getting settled into married life in Kensington Palace - but one thing that that’s sure to unnerve the royal pair is rumours that their new residence is haunted.

The historic London palace is said to be inhabited by ghosts and ghouls, according to legend.

And this Halloween members of the public will get the chance to witness the spooky goings-on for themselves, when ghosts tours are staged from October 28-31.

First bought in 1689 by King William III and wife Mary, the old palace has a rich history with reports of screams, ghostly sightings and bumps in the night, all of which have been recorded in the wardens’ log book.

A source told The Mirror: "For years now there have been rumours about Kensington Palace being haunted. In the evenings, the place has an atmosphere all of its own.

"There are lots of strange and unusual stories which the warders have logged over the years. There are bumps in the night and that kind of thing. It's fascinating stuff and not for the faint-hearted."

Kate and Wills live in a “relatively small” apartment in Kensington Palace when they are in London. Parts of the palace are currently uninhabited as it undergoes a refurbishment believed to cost £12 million, which is expected to be completed by 2012 in time for the Queen’s Jubilee year.

When they aren’t staying at the palace, the couple live in a cottage in Anglesey in Wales, where William works as an RAF search and rescue pilot.
