Kate Middleton fever has gone too far

The impending royal wedding seems to have made us all lose our minds... this is real life, not a fairy tale

Kate Middleton fever has gone too far

Good heir day: Kate and her handsome prince Pic: Rex Features

Once upon a time there was an ordinary girl and her name was Kate. Then she met a handsome prince whose name was Will and everyone in the nation went slightly mad.

We all started to believe in happy endings where ordinary girls with nice hair are able to end up living in palaces all because they married the right man. Why would we worry about glass ceilings when we could aim for the glass coaches?

I’m sure they’re a very pleasant, ordinary (ish) couple. Kate is pretty and kind and clearly in love with her man. And, one day, she will be queen. So far so marvellous.

And, furthermore, loads of us have got the day off to celebrate their wedding. Let there be waving of flags and quaffing of marriage-themed cocktails.

But please can we let the ballyhoo stop there with nothing more to show for it than a K&W tea towel and a hangover.

Let’s not forget that the fragrant Kate met her HP at university. As well as seducing the heir she also managed to get an honours degree in history of art. So she’s a clever girl with a bright career ahead of her. Oh, but she won’t need a job, will she? Because from April 29, 2011 she’ll be Mrs William Windsor, a professional wife.

If the fact the new icon of the decade is defined by the man she’ll marry isn’t bad enough, we learn that children are getting new princess style playmate.

That’s right. The Mr Bump, Mr Tickle et al are budging up to making room for a new member, Little Miss Princess.

The Mr Men range has been around for decades and includes the likes of Mr Strong, Mr Silly and Little Miss Messy.

The newest addition lives in a castle and wears a crown, but she’s kind and wants to help her fellow Little Miss and Mr Men. But “being a princess, she isn’t used to doing things herself, so everything doesn’t quite go to plan!”.

Adam Hargreaves, writer and illustrator of the Mr. Men and Little Miss books said “I thoroughly enjoyed creating Little Miss Princess and writing such fun stories for her. She’s an inspirational and fun character that girls of all ages will connect with.”

Inspirational. I wonder when she’s going to be ousted for Little Miss Managing Director, Little Miss Consultant Surgeon or even Little Miss Head of Department.

If this fairy story has to have a happy ending it’s that girls up and down the nation wake up to realise that, apart from William and his brother, there are no HPs and being a professional wife isn’t much of a career. And then we’ll all live happily ever after.
