Former Coronation Street star Iain De Caestecker, who played Adam Barlow on the Weatherfield soap as a teenager, has landed a starring role in a new Hollywood movie.

The Glaswegian actor will appear as the character Bones in forthcoming fantasy thriller How To Catch A Monster, which was written by Ryan Gosling and is the Place Beyond the Pines star's directorial debut.

Iain played the son of Mike Baldwin and Susan Barlow on Corrie between 2001 and 2003 but the character was recast – with Sam Robertson in the role – when Adam returned to the show in 2004.

Since that time, he has appeared in Lip Service, sci-fi series The Fades and won a Scottish BAFTA in the title role of Young James Herriot.

De Caestecker was spotted on location in Detroit at the weekend for his new movie, which also stars Gosling's girlfriend Eva Mendes and his Drive co-star Christina Hendricks.

The other main male role is to be played by Doctor Who's Matt Smith.

The young actor, who studied at Glasgow's Langside College after his time on Corrie, was also recently cast in the Avengers TV spin-off Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

He can soon be seen in the film adaptation of Irvine Welsh's Filth, starring James McAvoy, which is due for release in the UK later this year.
