Sir Elton John has a ball – though Kevin Spacey steps in for absent star

Kevin Spacey took Sir Elton John's place and co-hosted the singer's annual charity bash – after Elton stepped in to perform a series of Australian tour dates originally planned by George Michael.

The Oscar-winning actor was joined by fellow host David Furnish, Sir Elton's partner, at his Winter Ball Saturday night.

Speaking on the red carpet before the event kicked off, Spacey said he would do his "best" as host and was looking forward to having a "good time."

"It's an important event, it's a great event, we've got great entertainment tonight as well,” Spacey said. “At the last minute I've been asked to step in for Elton, although no one can really step in for Elton.”

The theme of the event, which is now in its sixth year, was the 1950's Cote D'Azur.

Stars who attended included Elizabeth Hurley, David Hasselhoff, fashion designer Giles Deacon and musicians Emeli Sande and Labrinth, who all performed.

Around 600 guests were invited to the bash at London's Battersea Power Station.

They were treated to a three-course dinner by Helene Darroze, plus auction lots by Ellen Von Unwerth, Gareth Pugh and Karim Rashid.

  • All money raised at the ball will go to the Elton John AIDS Foundation.
