Wham! bam: George is struggling in prison

Freedom singer George Michael is reported to be struggling with life on the inside as he begins an eight-week sentence for crashing his car under the influence of drugs. Other cons at Pentonville Prison have been taunting him.

He is reported to have been put into segregation for his own safety as inmates teased him with the lyrics of his own songs.

An inmate who was freed yesterday told the Daily Mirror: “I’ve heard he’s in bits and has been crying in the dinner hall.”

Poor George needs to have a look at how other celebrities fared behind bars and maybe he could learn something.

Pete Doherty used his time in jail – for burglary – as creative inspiration. He wrote songs and a diary. He later said: “The inmates terrified me."

James Brown was in prison several times but during his first stretch his vocal talent caught the eye of Bobby Byrd who helped him secure early release.

Oscar Wilde who served two years hard labour for gross indecency with men used his time to create, coming out to write The Ballad of Reading Gaol.

Culture Club singer Boy George served time for assault and false imprisonment last year. And despite the probation service turning down his request to appear in Celebrity Big Brother, his career does not seem to have been harmed.

Nelson Mandela used his imprisonment to become the figurehead of his nation’s anti-apartheid movement.

Former MP and novelist Jeffrey Archer used his time in jail, for perjury and perverting the course of justice, to write and maintain friendships with high-profile pals. Opportunist Archer, saw his sentence as a chance to further his career.
