Cole-d shoulder: the couple will be divorced today according to reports
Cheryl Cole and Ashley Cole are set to get divorced today, putting an end to their short-lived, turbulent marriage, according to reports.
The X Factor judge is expected to be granted a decree nisi at London’s High Court at 10am this morning. Then, after a six-week ‘cooling off’ period, the decree absolute will be granted – and the pair will no longer have any legal connection whatsoever, putting an end to their four-year union.
The end of the marriage will come as a relief to Cheryl, who was left devastated after rumours of Ashley’s alleged infidelity surfaced in February this year. The claims followed earlier reports in their marriage that Ashley had also cheated on the singer with hairdresser Aimee Walton, following a boozy night out.
The divorce process had been stalled after Cheryl fell in with malaria in July, but she told her legal teams to move things along once she was fit and well again.
The court case has been listed under only the couple’s initials – CAC v AC, Cheryl Ann Cole versus Ashley Cole – in an apparent bid to avoid publicity, and neither Cheryl nor Ashley is expected to attend the hearing this morning.
A source told The Sun: “Cheryl is in the States but is watching things very closely. She is relived and pleased things have progressed significantly since her illness. She just wants to move on with her life and getting the divorce done will end a very painful chapter. It must be remembered that Cheryl did not ask for this. The last thing she expected was to be a divorcee at 27.”
Following their separation at the start of the year, Cheryl has become increasingly close to Dancing With The Stars professional Derek Hough, who many believe is her new boyfriend. Ashley has been pictured with various women on nights out and holidays abroad, and had a recent relationship with former lapdancer Sarah Purnell.
The couple had at one point been dubbed the ‘new Posh and Becks’, becoming engaged during a romantic holiday in Dubai, less than a year after they started dating. They then got married in a fairytale ceremony in 2006, which was covered by a glossy magazine. However their relationship started to unravel in January 2008, when news about Ashley's fling with Aimee Walton surfaced.
