Girl alone: has Cheryl left the band that made her famous?
Cheryl Cole has raised speculation that she has quit Girls Aloud, after referring to the band during an interview as ‘a girl group I was with for seven years’.
The singer, who has had huge success as a solo artist after launching her career late last year, was appearing on the Danish TV’s version of The X Factor.
In her first arranged appearance since her marriage to Ashley Cole broke down, the Fight For This Love singer spoke about how proud she was to have reached Number One on her own, after hitting the top spot three times with the group.
Speaking to the host, she said: “The previous three tracks were with a girl group I was with for seven years – so to be Number One solo was crazy, like the best feeling in the world.”
After her comments, rumours flew around that the singer, who has been rumoured to be considering quitting the band since her solo career took off, had decided this was the time to leave.
However a spokesman for the star said that Cheryl’s comments had been misconstrued. He said: “Cheryl is still a member of Girls Aloud. She was just putting her solo Number One into context for an audience that would not be aware of Girls Aloud.”
Meanwhile, Ashley has reportedly turned down the chance to meet Cheryl for face-to-face talks about their marriage. The pair had been set to meet this week to see if they could salvage their relationship, after various women came forward to claim they had slept with the footballer.
However, it seems that Ashley has decided instead to stay put at a sports injury clinic in France, after doctors reportedly informed him that his chances of playing in the World Cup this summer would be jeopardised if he were to leave.
