Two burglars broke into Cheryl Cole’s £4million mansion last night, in what is believed to have been an attempt to snatch the singer’s £310,000 wedding rings.

Cheryl, who is currently in LA following her performance at The Brit Awards on Tuesday, made a point of leaving the diamond bands after her marriage was rocked by yet more rumours about her husband’s alleged infidelity.

And it seems that the cheeky intruders thought they’d get their hands on the valuable rings while the star is stateside.

Shaken footballer Ashley called cops after the disturbance at around 4.30am, and told them: “Please come quick. Someone is trying to break in.”

Police strongly believe the two men – who tried force their way through a window at the mansion - were breaking in to steal X Factor judge Cheryl’s £150,000 diamond engagement ring, and another diamond ring costing £160,000, which Ashley gave her in 2008 after the first affair rumours surfaced.

In the last few days, Ashley has been linked to another two women, with rumours that he sent nude photos of himself to one, a glamour model, and bedded the other women, a secretary.

Since the news emerged, Cheryl has been seen sporting a huge piece of dress jewellery where her engagement and wedding rings once were.

The singer’s rep has said the star is in LA to record new songs, in a trip which has been arranged for several weeks.

The star is believed to be considering divorcing her hubby after the latest affair claims emerged – and if she does, she could be in for a huge divorce settlement as the couple didn’t sign a pre-nuptial agreement before their glitzy 2006 wedding.
