X Factor Judge Cheryl Cole has given her backing to Simon Cowell’s plans to record a charity single in aid of the Haiti earthquake disaster. And the Girls Aloud star could be joined by Susan Boyle, who controversially found herself excluded from this year’s Brit Awards nominations.
Cowell has decided to press ahead with the Band Aid style single after prompting from Prime Minister Gordon Brown and The Sun newspaper. Speaking at the national Television Awards last night, where The X Factor picked up the prize for Most Popular Talent show, the pop mogul said he has “a couple of ideas’ which song to cover.
Fellow X Factor judge Cheryl Cole, who attended the awards alongside fellow panellist and newly pregnant Dannii Minogue. said she’d jump at the chance to be involved.
She declared:” "I think it's a fantastic thing to do, I'd love to be involved in it."
Cowell, who this week signed a $500m joint deal with Sony, has set himself a target of 48 hours to pull the project together. Given his stable of pop acts and contacts, obvious choices would be X Factor winner and multi-platinum selling R'n'B singer Leona Lewis as well as Britain’s Got Talent singing sensation, Scottish spinster Susan Boyle.
Other names in the frame could be George Michael, Robbie Williams, Beyonce, Lady GaGa and Rihanna - all of whom appeared on this year’s The X Factor.
In 1984, Bob Geldof and Midge Ure brought together a charity supergroup featuring stars such as Duran Duran’s Simon Le Bon, George Michael, Bono and Sting for the original Band Aid single, Do They Know It’s Christmas? to raise funds for famine relief in Ethiopia.
It went on to become No.1 and spawned multi-venue charity concert Live Aid which was broadcast live across the globe in 1985..
