The family of Brittany Murphy have released a statement calling her a “shining star” after the actress’s sudden death yesterday at the age of 32. During her career she starred in movies including Sin City, Clueless and Girl, Interrupted.

The family statement said: "The sudden loss of our beloved Brittany is a terrible tragedy.

“She was our daughter, our wife, our love and a shining star. We ask you to respect our privacy at this time."

Murphy was pronounced dead at Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre at about 10 am, two hours after her mother reportedly found her unconscious in the shower of the actress' Hollywood Hills home.

A spokesman for the Los Angeles County Coroner said there were no suspicious circumstances, but that an autopsy would take place in the next few days.

Former boyfriend Ashton Kutcher wrote on Twitter: “Today the world lost a little piece of sunshine. My deepest condolences go out to Brittany’s family, her husband, and her amazing mother Sharon. See you on the other side kid.”

Murphy's estranged father, Angelo Bertolotti said after hearing of her death: "She was just an absolute doll since she was born...Her personality was always outward. Everybody loved her."

He added: "She was just so talented. I loved her very much."
