Fern Britton takes anti-depressant tablets every day.

The former 'This Morning' presenter has been unable to stop taking mood-enhancing medication - often referred to as 'happy pills' - since she left the ITV show in July but insists she is "cheery" and pleased with life right now.

She explained: "I genuinely am cheery at the moment and on an even keel. I've got my medication completely right. I still take a small amount of anti-depressants every day, for me it's like being a diabetic.

"When I don't have it, like this summer when I finished work, I thought, 'I'll ease myself off it and see what happens. Perhaps I'll be fine now'. And I wasn't fine. My GP is fantastic. Sadly, I think it's something we have in the family."

As well as relying on tablets to keep her spirits up, the 52-year-old presenter admitted she also has to take hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to help level out the effects of the menopause.

Fern - who previously had a gastric band fitted to help her lose weight - also said she is happy with the way she looks and wouldn't have Botox to keep her skin smooth and wrinkle-free.

She explained: "How do I look? Like a medium-sized ordinary woman. I've got wrinkles, I haven't had Botox - couldn't give a f**k about that. And my bosoms, I have to roll them up like old Swiss rolls to put them in my bra."
