In an interview with ITN The Grimes twins described Boyle as ‘a phenemenon’ and it was clear they see parallels with the negative reaction initially meted out to the Scottish singing sensation when she first appeared on Britains’ Got Talent to raised eyebrows before winning over her doubters, and their own reality TV journey..
Boyle was shown performing her debut single Wild Horses from new album I Dreamed A Dream on last night’s show.
The album is the biggest selling pre-order CD of all time on Amazon.
The twins said: “At the start [of Britain’s Got talent} everyone was thinking , ‘Oh my god what is she doing here?’.
“And now everybody has realised, ‘Hey she’s come so far. She’s doing great and her album is the fastest pre-order [CD] of all time.”
In another reference that seemed to chime with their own status as unlikely stars who have managed to capture the public’s imagination, John and Edward pointed out that like them Boyle’s success was built on staying true to herself and not trying to be something she’s not.
““We didn’t feel we had to change for anyone,” they said of their time on the X Factor where they were the subjected to ridicule for not being able to sing and routinely dismissed by X Factor judge and show’s creator Simon Cowell.
Despite that they still managed to hang on until the seventh week before being ousted from the show.
“When we came on if people loved us they loved us, and if people hated us they hated us,” they said optimistically adding: “She [Susan Boyle] didn’t feel when came to the competition she had to change. She just gave it ‘I’m Susan Boyle. I’m going to go out here and sing’ and people liked her for that. Now she’s known all over the world.”
Despite being axed from The X Factor PR Guru max Clifford has claimed the twins could be “the next Ant and Dec” and believes they could have a massive television career ahead of them.
Ladbrokes are offering 10/1 odds of the pair winning the Christmas Number One, while they are evens to host a children's TV show on BBC, ITV, CHannel 4 or Five by the end of 2010.
