A US man taught his son the fictional language Klingon for the first three years of his life.

D'Armond Speers from Minnesota used the made up language of the fictional alien race Klingons - from TV sci-fi adventure series 'Star Trek' - with his son as an experiment to understand how children learn languages.

D'Armond - a software consultant and expert in computational linguistics - said: "I was interested in the question of whether my son, going through his first language acquisition process, would acquire it like any human language. He was definitely starting to learn it."

During the three years he spoke to his son in Klingon, D'Armond's wife spoke in standard English.

D'Armond has since landed a job with an internet software company creating a dictionary in Klingon for use in language applications on mobile phones and computers.
