Hurricane 2: the bawbag returns... or does it?

The wind speeds were even higher this time; but what would we call Scotland's latest storm?

Hurricane 2: the bawbag returns... or does it?

With gusts up to a 100 miles an hour, (102 at Blackford Hill in Edinburgh) the storm that hit Scotland this morning was officially worse than the one on December 8.

That was immediately christened #hurricanebawbag by the Twitterati, a term quickly trending worldwide to the confusion of anyone unlucky enough to be born north of the Border. (If you want to know what bawbag means read our delicately phrased story from that day).

So the big Twitter debate this morning was what to call its successor. For many, the original was still the best

  • _MemeLove: Only Scotland could have a hurricane called #bawbag. No irene's or katrina's, but bawbags
  • SSJEugeen: #HurricaneBawbag trending again! Ye'll never tak oor freedom!
  • djrobingalloway: Rumours of Bawbag's demise have been wildly exaggerated. The beast is back and tossing trees like matchsticks. #bawbag
  • paulcardwell: Worse than #bawbag just drove over a tree, round a trampoline and countless wheelie bins. In sainsburys and there windows are blowing out.
  • RadioPaulo: #HurricaneBawbag is back and this time it looks like he's brought the twins - Testie & Tickle
  • alanchungx: #hurricanebawbag has returned and I've to go and do a paper round, there's a high chance of death by a flying cow hitting my head

And including Hurricane Bawbag himself who got more than he bargained for:

  • HurricaneBawbag: Now a proud new owner of my neighbours shed, garden chairs and a few old magazines & newspapers. #bawbag

But it took a woman to make the inevitable and essential joke of the morning so well done Fiona Mackenzie Kerr.

  • fi_mackenzie: #HurricaneBawbag got a wee second wind... BOOM i said it

There was even a follow up to Oh My God! Trampoline!

Though sadly they forgot to say Oh My God! Wheelie Bin!

But for others it was time for a new #hastag. The Broons, that essential Scottish reference point, would have called it #hurricanhelmaboab, and a few people did.

  • tomcara: #hurricanehelpmaboab is much worse than #bawbag, tiles flying off roof, some poor woman trapped under a flying caravan on Byres Road
  • AllanahWrites:My bedroom door is moving yet all windows are shut! Ghost or #hurricanehelpmaboab
  • mickmcavoy: As my entire tenement block slowly & creakily glides eastwards I regret mocking the Mayans for apocalyptic predictions #hurricanehelpmaboabMick wasn't  the only person to spot that 2012 is supposed to herald the end of the world according to the calendar drawn up by the ancient  Mayan civilization in what is now Mexico
  • rfmckay: #scotstorm. Something is rattling on the roof... Dang. Do you think the Mayans were right after all?

And #scotstorm was the choice of the more genteel, such as crime writer Ian Rankin

  • Beathhigh: I'm sure there's a good reason why one of our chimney pots is lying in the garden... #scotstorm
  • kevinnjackson: OK, own up, who in Scotland has upset Mother Nature, she's been in a really bad mood for ages?! #scotstorm
  • MartynMcL: Glasgow resembles a Time Team dig: shards of slate and masonry pepper every street. Grand start to 2012 for the slaters #scotstorm

There were some even ruder ones (go on, guess) and some distinctly weird ones but the new name of the day which got you smiling was defintiely #cyclone bampot

  • darthchansik: So you've all named this one Cyclone Bampot? I'm casually crying with laughter. #cyclonebampot
  • octobrrr: Oh, it's not #hurricanebawbag, it's #cyclonebampot today. Scotland, how I love you.
  • curlybeach Hannah: I hear this one's being referred to as #CycloneBampot? The Scots definitely win the 'best names for extreme weather events' medal
  • drmarkjardine:#cyclonebampot Tornado on the Clyde (but as Mark Jardine adds in his blog, there is nothing new here that wasn't seen in 1678.

Bampot or Bawbag, for one Tweeter it was all getting too much

  • goodboybond: a wee draft and everyones in a panic aboot #cyclonebampot #scotstorm just zip your jackets up people! Good day to hang a washin oot tae dry!

Seriously though...

After "B@wbag", convention dictates that the next hurricane's name should begin with a "C"... don't know if you can say that one on-air though.
