Rachael Stirling will play the title role of Medea in a new version by Mike Bartlett which will have its world premiere at the Citizens Theatre this autumn, before touring to London and across the UK.

Rachael is the daughter of actress Diana Rigg and theatre producer Archibald Stirling, who has the esteemed title of Laird of the Keir estate at Lecropt in Stirling,  How posh. She studied at Edinburgh University, gaining a BA in history of art.

The stunning actress is best known for her performance as Nancy Astley in the hit BBC drama Tipping the Velvet.

Rachael has twice been nominated for the Olivier award for Best Supporting Actress, and was most recently seen on stage in The Recruiting Officer at the Donmar Warehouse.

She also played Anna in blockbuster movie Snow White and the Huntsman (yes, the one hitting the headlines for all the wrong reasons) and she has just finished shooting an episode of Dr Who, which was written specifically for her by Mark Gatiss.

Mike Bartlett, one of the UK's most exciting and in demand young writers, will direct this contemporary staging of one of the most timeless and primal myths of western civilisation.

In this chilling study of passion, love and vengeance; Bartlett transforms the wronged everywoman of Greek mythology into a recognisable and fallible woman of today.
The show runs from September 27 till the October 13.
