STV and stv.tv will be working in partnership with the National Theatre of Scotland (NTS) to help deliver Five Minute Theatre, the 24 hour live stream of over 200 performances taking place on Tuesday 21 June, in celebration of the NTS's fifth birthday.
The NTS announced today (Monday 18 April) that 230 submissions across eleven countries, featuring over 1000 performers, have been selected from over 300 submissions to take part in the project.
STV will make this unique 24 hour event available to its online audience by streaming it live on stv.tv, and thereafter will host the individual entries on a specially designed micro-site after the event. They will also be available via STV's Youtube channel.
In addition, the broadcaster will also provide technical and studio facilities, enabling eight of the successful projects to be performed and recorded in advance at STV’s studio at Pacific Quay in Glasgow. What will make the five minute scripts pieces of theatre rather than short films is that they have to be performed in front of a live audience.
STV’s popular daily live show, The Hour, will feature a selection of the many quirky theatre projects and performers in the days leading up to the online event, and STV Local, STV’s network of hyper-local websites, will cover stories about performers from the local areas covered by the service.
Robert Dawson Scott, web editor at stv.tv, said: “We’re thrilled to be involved with such an innovative and ambitious online project and delighted that we can help the National Theatre of Scotland reach out to the whole of Scotland and beyond. By making our facilities and platforms available, we can help deliver a wider audience for the whole adventure.”
Marianne Maxwell, audience development manager for the NTS, added: “The response to Five Minute Theatre from all over the world has been fantastic. There is a huge range of ideas from a huge range of people. The creativity of each submission promises live and virtual audiences 24 hours of short, original, funny and brilliant entertainment on June 21st. We’re delighted to be partnering with STV on this ambitious project.”
The NTS was launched in February 2006, and has since created or helped to create over 137 productions in 125 different locations. With no building of its own, the Company prides itself on taking theatre all over Scotland as well as to surprising venues, which have included airports and tower blocks, community halls and drill halls, ferries and forests. The company has performed to almost 600,000 people, across three continents.
