BGT judge Amanda Holden signs up to Shrek

Fairytale role: Amanda Holden is to star in the musical adaptation of Shrek

Britain’s Got Talent’s Amanda Holden will be swapping her judging seat for the Wet End stage, after confirming she has signed up to appear in Shrek The Musical.

The blonde actress and presenter is to take on the role of Princess Fiona, Shrek’s wife, in the stage adaptation of the animated comedy.

It’ll be a brand new challenge for Holden, who has a wealth of acting roles under her belt, including starring in the TV show Cutting It, and in various stage appearances in shows including Thoroughly Modern Millie.

Joining Amanda in the musical is comedy and radio legend Richard Blackwood, who has been cast as Shrek’s hilarious sidekick Donkey.

Confirming her new job, Amanda said on her Twitter account: "It's true about me being Princess Fiona in Shrek! I'm so excited but best of all [my daughter] Lexi is telling everyone mama will be a Green Princess!"

Shrek The Musical opens at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in May 2011, and tickets for the show go on sale from October 1 this year.
