Kevin McHugh aka Ambivalent has spent the last decade living in Berlin and NYC and the musical influence from both of these cities have undoubtedly worked their way into his trademark sound. This year, Ambivalent will support Richie Hawtin as he embarks on the Plastikman Live 1.5 UK Tour which takes place in London, Manchester and Glasgow.
Hello Ambivalent, can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I was born a baby DJ in a small town called Washington DC, and became a grown-up DJ in a smaller town known as New York, NY. Since then I’ve taken my wagon from place to place in search of the best local recipe for good times.
How did you come up with the name Ambivalent?
Well, I kind of like the name, but I kind of don’t. Just like with everything. So I guess in a way it suits me perfectly.
Your about to embark on the Richie Hawtin presents Plastikman 1.5 LIVE UK tour… How does it feel to be involved?
I was part of the last incarnation of Plastikman Live, back in 2004. At the time I helped Rich produce the show, but technology wasn’t quite able to match what he imagined. I’m thrilled that it’s finally a full realisation of that dream, because I shared it with him. And it’s particularly special to be invited to warm up the crowd, and set a proper context for what they’re about to see. A true honour.
What can the audience expect from the live shows? Any surprises in store?
I can’t speak about what to expect from the Plastikman Live shows, as there are security guards watching me while I type to ensure that I don’t give away any secrets. As far as my sets, I’ll just say Spoiler Alert: I will play as many bombs as I can to get people ready for a great show. I’ve just been told I’ve already said too much.
How does it feel to be a part of the Minus crew?
Sort of like doing what you love most surrounded by people you’ve known longer than anyone else. Well, not “like” that. It is that.
What have you been up to in the studio lately?
You’re catching me at a time when I’m dismantling the studio and rebuilding it. I’m adding new gear, creating a completely new routing system and moving everything around. So we’ll see if it comes to some good results!
Who would you love to collaborate with in the future?
I’ve collaborated several times with my buddy JPLS and my good friend Alexi Delano. Those were great records to make, because I really enjoy what comes from a collaboration. As far as who I can imagine working with, there are plenty. But talking about it here would be like confessing a crush on television. Makes for some awkward moments at school the next day.
Track of the moment?
Has to be Jake & Amber - This Is Mine.
Whose productions do you love right now?
A lot. Michael Penman is great. I also love Saso Recyd, Objekt, Vakula, Paul Woolford, Nebraska, Aemkay. Many others. It’s a great time for music if you’re looking in the right places.
Thanks for taking the time out to talk to stv clubs, see you in December at the Barrowlands!
Great! Thanks! See you then.
