I’ll start this off with a shocking fact: I am (well i was) an Ibiza virgin. Yes you read correctly, I´ve never been to the legendary white isle before. Accompanied with my Ibiza veteran friend, I take myself off to Cream at Amnesia for my first big Ibiza clubbing experience.
A bit of research tells me that Amnesia has such a cracking sound system that it ‘compares to having a sound massage’; surely this can only be a good thing?! Also there are ice cannons. As a fair skinned scot who doesn’t do well with heat, being blasted with dry ice in a jam packed club sounds brilliant!
Tonight Paul Van Dyk is headlining the main room alongside sets from Gareth Wyn and Eddie Halliwell. Also on this particular Thursday, Laidback Luke opens his Super Me & You party at Amnesia; encouraging clubbers to dress up as their favourite superhero, this is set to be an interesting night...
On arrival, we head to the main room and take in our surroundings; Gareth Wyn is playing to an already busy club getting them going for the night ahead. The club itself is impressive, large screens tell us who is on the decks, and theres no space to be found on any speaker as groups of people squueze themselves up onto one of the best spots in the house. Although not on a speaker, we find a elivated spot on top of some stairs, far enough back to see the DJs in action on decks but close enough to get right in amongst it with the crowd.
Shortly after we get there the legend that is Eddie Halliwell makes his appearance and turns up the notch on the bass. Apparently it doesnt matter where you are in the world, when Eddie´s around you cant escape the EDDIE EDDIE EDDIE HALLIWELL chants. I have to admit I was more than happy to join in! He churns out anthem after anthem; having us all singing Swedish House Mafia´s Save the World and my all time favourite Green Velvet - Flash (Nicky Romero remix) which was most defintely the highlight of my night.
When you don´t think it can get any better, here comes PVD, greeting the crowd with smiles and waves, the now jam packed club was delilghted to see him. He had the clubbers in a spin with tune after tune, flinging in some old school such as For An Angel and some crowd sing alongs such as Martin Solveig´s - Hello.
Unfortunatley I didnt get to experience the Mixmag terrace to its full potential as I think I managed to only get my pinky toe in the door, it was full to the brim. But what a wonderful sight, revellers kitted out in some weird and wonderful fancy dress treat Laidback Luke like a god, as he bounces all around his decks in his Karate Kit esque attire. I also heard some planking took place between Laidback Luke and Eddie Halliwell on top of the speakers!
I cant finish this off without a mention to the ice cannons. Magnificent dry ice blasting down amongst thousands of sweaty dancers can only be described as heaven. Once you get the first blast you are waiting on the next hit!
My night draws to an end around 5am when my feet are on fire and I have no voice left from wooping and singing; we head home exhausted but happy. Now when my friends say that Amnesia is up there with the best nightclubs in the world I can just nod in agreement....
