In its 11th year, the Wickerman Festival arrives this Friday and Saturday, based at East Kirkcarswell, near Dundrennan in south west Scotland. Fingers are no doubt currently being crossed that a bit of sunshine might finally greet one of the main Scottish summer music festivals this year.
Billing itself as a celebration of art and entertainment, there’s plenty on offer beyond the headline acts - including the traditional burning of the Wickerman at the culmination of events on the Saturday - with a special ‘Olympia’ theme this year.
An indication of its reputation as a more family-friendly festival, on-site activities are set to include storytelling by bestselling children’s author, Aiken Drum, a fun fair, dry slope skiing, hula-hooping, fire walking, festival golf, Laser Quest, music and dance workshops, cinema, grass-sledging, wood-carving demonstrations and the 7stanes mountain bike display team, amongst plenty more activities.
Organisers are also encouraging visitors to get their togas out and don their best Grecian crown to join in with the theme. Wickerman festival coordinator Helen Chalmers said: “We hope that festival goers will get into the spirit of our Olympia theme, and that Wickerman might encourage people to try something they haven’t before... fire walking anyone?!”
But of course, there’s a rich variety of music on offer, with acts performing across the 10 stages. New York disco-pop group Scissor Sisters will be glamming up the main Summerisle Stage on the Friday, accompanied by the likes of Levellers, Cast, Bis and hotly tipped Scottish act Bwani Junction.
On Friday it’s reformed Scottish rockers Texas who will come to the festival armed with their range of hits. Also performing on the Summerisle Stage that day are the likes of The View, Newton Faulkner and Kassidy.
However, it would be a crime to miss out on the other stages – with everything from acoustic to ska, and reggae to dance showcased. (More info on announced artists and stages here.)
It’s also very much worth checking out the carefully curated Solus Tent and goNORTH Festival Tour Tent, each offering a number of hotly tipped up-and-coming Scottish acts. Olympic Swimmers, Washington Irving, United Fruit, Beerjacket, Miniature Dinosaurs and Fridge Magnets are just some of the acts that you should make every effort to go and see.
Focusing on a friendly atmosphere and offering plenty of well selected entertainment, the trip down to East Kirkcarswell has become more and more tempting every year.
