Scottish singer David John tells STV how he came to be hanging out with 50 Cent and Snoop Dogg

Only recently an unknown, David John is now signed to the same management label as Diddy, Mariah Carey, Busta Rhymes and 50 Cent, and is this month releasing debut single Mr. Fantastic. He’s talked to STV about his amazing journey.

Born and raised just outside of Glasgow, singer-songwriter David had nearly given up on his dream of stardom – when a chance meeting changed his life forever.

He told us: “I basically got my break in Spain of all places, when I was on holiday.

“I was jamming with a band, and lucky enough for me an A&R guy was there from New York. He told me to get a demo together.

“I came back to Glasgow, I was in a small garage, and I put it together with one of my old mates from school.

“I got on a plane, went to America for a meeting. They loved the song and before you know it I had producers on my door and wanting to work with me.”

David was signed up to Violator Records & Management, who have looked after the likes of Diddy, Mariah Carey, Busta Rhymes and 50 Cent.

The singer revealed: “I was at Snoop Dogg’s album launch, and I was on the 50 Cent tour, so I got to hang out with them a lot.

“There’s been a few gigs with Ed Sheeran, we’ve done one in Northern Ireland together. I was recently at the Brit Awards as well, which I got my first invite to, it was a bit of a surprise to get that through the post, but it was good to get invited. I was hanging out with Olly Murs and my boy Labrinth.

“There’s a lot of things that happened in between then, but it’s just been one of those things – you take your chances when they come, but it’s luck as well, being in the right place at the right time.

“But I’m very happy, very happy to be on board.”

David also talked to us about the video for debut single Mr. Fantastic, out on May 14 – and revealed that there might be a very special guest for his follow-up, though his lips were sealed about that!
