Blur took the gong for Outstanding Contribution to Music at the BRIT Awards 2012, 17 years since the band last attended the glittering bash.
Blur, who have been together for more than 21 years, performed at the BRITs in 1995, where they won an incredible four gongs, including Best Band, Best Album, Best Single and Best British Video for Parklife.
As the band took to the stage tonight, Damon Albarn said: “Thank you very much. The last time we were here was 17 years ago and what happened that night seemed to have a really profound effect on our lives so it’s very nice to come back and say thank you very much for this honour, but there are an awful lot of people I need to thank so I hope you can bear with me…”
From there, the singer went on to thank family, friends and the record label etc, before dedicating the award to a “special person” – manager Chris Morrison.
He said: “He took us as four completely broke young men and kind of helped us in so many ways. He was a friend he as well as a great business manager. He looked after us a treat…”
Damon added: “Thank you Chris Morrison for everything mate, you are a very dear friend.”
With a new album on the way and Blur set to headline at Hyde Park, with New Order and The Specials, to celebrate the closing of the 2012 Summer Olympics, it promises to be quite a year for the group and their millions of fans.
Judging by the performances at the BRITs 2012 from acts including Coldplay, Adele, Ed Sheeran and Blur’s Britpop arch rival Noel Gallagher, not to mention Blur themselves, it seems the British music industry will continue to go from strength-to-strength, providing some of the most loved and iconic tunes in the world.
As Blur ended the show with a medley of their hits, including Girls and Boys, Song 2 and Parklife, complete with Phil Daniels, which had the crowd going wild, it was a fitting end to a brilliantly British celebration of musical success.
