This year’s highly anticipated BRIT Awards are almost upon us, with the eyes of the nation focused on who will be scooping the top prizes, but just as exciting is the speculation surrounding which popular artists will be taking to the stage for a priceless duet.
Last year it was Florence + the Machine and Dizzee Rascal who set the stage on fire with ‘You’ve Got the Dirty Love’, but which BRITs duets are our favourites of all time?
In a poll released yesterday, it was revealed that Tom Jones and Stereophonics’ performance of ‘Mama Told Me Not to Come’ in 2000 has been voted the number one BRIT Awards duet in history, closely followed by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ ‘Empire State of Mind’ in 2010 and Rihanna and the Klaxons’ rendition of ‘Umbrella’ in 2008.
Music journalist Paul Lester cannot wait to see this year’s spectacular duet, which is rumoured to be a performance by Rihanna and Coldplay’s Chris Martin, and he revealed who he’d like to see collaborating on stage.
He said: “Death Grips and Olly Murs would be great, and rapper Frank Ocean and Lulu would be good. The BRITs duets are the two people that everyone is chatting about, and two people poles apart getting together for pop history is what it’s all about.
“I quite liked Lady Gaga meets the Pet Shop Boys but it was voted the least favourite. Beyonce doing Outkast was good as well.
“I’d like to duet with Azealia Banks. She said I was the nicest and fairest journalist she’s ever encountered. It’s pure fantasy on my part and if it were to happen I’d sound like a pub singer with a bad hangover.”

Ed Sheeran is hotly tipped to be named Best Male Solo Artist, while Adele and Jessie J are the favourites to scoop the Best Female Solo Artist Award. Emeli Sande has already won the Critics’ Choice Award, but Paul has his own opinions on this year’s potential award winners.
“Adele is the most overrated nominee,” he said. “It’s almost transgressive to utter a word against her, but it’s extraordinary that she’s dominated dinner party discourse while being so uninteresting.
“Coldplay are also overrated and are boring, mundane and tedious. The Weekend should be nominated under Best International Group and Azealia Banks under Best International Breakthrough Female.”
The BRIT Awards 2012 and Mastercard have teamed up to offer music fans the chance to perform a Priceless Duet with their favourite artists. Three lucky fans have already been chosen to perform with Labrinth, JLS and Emeli Sande, and a duet with Jessie J is still up for grabs. See the Something for the Fans website for more details.
The BRIT Awards 2012 will be shown on STV tonight at 8pm. The full list of nominees can be seen here.
