The Scottish Alternative Music Awards are back and the nominees have just been announced, showcasing an impressive line-up of Scottish talent.
The SAMAs help raise the profile and celebrate bands and artists who are often overlooked at other, more mainstream, ceremonies.
Last year saw the fantastic The La Fontaines and Three Blind Wolves perform and this year’s event, held at Glasgow’s The Garage venue, promises to be just as exciting.
It’s testament to the hard work of Founder and Creative Director of the SAMAs, Richy Muirhead, that the awards were recently supported by a Scottish Parliament motion.
An MSP said: “The creativity of Richy Muirhead is important to the music scene across Scotland and I am sure he will continue to play his part, and encourage more young people to take part in music not only at schools, but outside too.
“It is important that recognising new, talented bands and artists will continue to help the great image that Scotland has in the music industry, and I hope the BBC will continue to air Introducing in Scotland to assist with that image.”
Nominees are chosen by leading figure heads from the Scottish music industry and the SAMAs 2012 are being held in association with retro clothing store Vintage Guru, which aims to support up-and-coming acts in Scotland.
Richy said: “The diversity of the nominees this year are incredible. It’s really warming to see artists from all over areas of Scotland involved, for example Skye, Aberdeen, Ayrshire and further afield. This really gives a sense of Scotland to the awards, which is what SAMAs is all about.”
The Scottish Alternative Music Awards launch on Wednesday February 8 at Bar Bloc Glasgow from 9pm.
