Garbage yesterday announced their comeback, with a new album due out and touring dates already announced. (Read all about it here.)
The skewed rock four-piece was the band that made the Scottish singer a global star – and Shirley Manson talked to STV news programme Scotland Today about the decision that led to long-term success in the music world (something she had tasted briefly with Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie and Angelfish).
Speaking on the show, Shirley revealed: “I didn’t really believe it for a while.
“I just said to the person on the other end: ‘Well, I’ll think about it, I’ll be in touch.’
“I called my record company and said: ‘There’s this producer that’s interested in working with me, his name’s Butch Vig.’
“They were like ‘What?’, and then they said: ‘Go back to your record collection and have a look at Nevermind and see who produced that, and you’ll have some idea of who is trying to get in contact with you.’”
Shirley also explained how stepping up to the songwriting plate was a challenge to her.
She said: “I’d never really written before, and they were saying ‘We want you to be absolutely a quarter part of the writing. I was like ‘Yes, of course’, and then I was thinking ‘I can’t do this’.”
