It’s not often that royalty comes to Glasgow but this was the case tonight when Motown Queen Martha Reeves hit the stage at The Arches.
The night got underway with 60s tribute band The New Piccadillys getting the crowd going and setting the stage for the arrival of Martha and the Vandellas.
Taking to the stage Martha launched into one of the bands first hits Come and Get These Memories - the launch pad for greater things still to come.
By the time the band hit Nowhere to Run the audience were already in the palm of Martha’s hand – and they were encouraged to dance and sing along whenever they wanted to.
She took the crowd on a journey through the band’s greatest hits, most of which formed the backbone of 60’s pop. They also performed a tribute to a band Martha admired very much, The Beatles, by playing Something.
Each song was easily over five minutes long with amazing solos from the talented group of musicians on stage. A drum solo at the end of (Love Is Like a) Heatwave had the audience participating in a question and answer session that was one of the highlights of the evening.
Of course no Martha and the Vandellas concert would be complete without them performing their signature song Dancing in the Street and an extended version of this was what bought the great concert to an end.
Martha showed tonight that she could give someone half her age a run for their money when it comes to energy, but would certainly beat them hands down when it comes to showmanship.
