Scottish star Emeli Sande “overwhelmed” to win BRITS’ Critics’ Choice award Emeli Sande has said that she is “overwhelmed” to have won the coveted BRITS Critics’ Choice Award.

Her achievement was announced today, after the singer beat other shortlisted acts, runner-up Maverick Sabre and third-placed Michael Kiwanuka, to the top prize.

She said: “To win a BRIT Award so early in my career is beyond a dream come true. I am overwhelmed to be the recipient of such a prestigious award."

The Scottish star, who first hit the music scene when she collaborated with rapper Chipmunk on Diamond Rings, has seen her career really take off in the last year.

Hits Heaven and Read All About It - on which she teamed up with Professor Green - have both stormed the charts, reaching number two and number one respectively.

The Critics’ Choice award is given to an artist or a group music critics believe will be the most successful act in the coming year, so it’s a huge honour to be nominated. To be able to qualify for the award, artists must be due to release their debut album in 2012.

Previous winners of the award include Jessie J, Ellie Goulding, Adele and Florence and the Machine, who have all gone on to achieve widespread success in the industry.

Emeli is currently supporting Coldplay on tour and recently played a date at Glasgow’s SECC – a city she is very familiar with, after studying at Glasgow University for several years.
