Oh we love a good chart battle and what better than a boyband war to whet our appetites before we start placing our bets on the Christmas number one.

The boybands in question? One Direction v Westlife. Technically more boyband v manband but hey, both have massive fanbases.

Westlife’s Greatest Hits collection is due for release on November 21 as is One Direction’s debut album.

Once the golden boys of pop, Westlife may struggle to compete with the might of the X Factor stars who took the number one spot in the UK charts at the weekend with their debut single What Makes You Beautiful.

The track has become the fastest-selling single of the year so far and Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan certainly have the attention of the tween market.

According to Digital Spy, the boys are destined to go on to bigger and better things as Simon Cowell is keen to take them to America to sign a US record deal.

Don’t rule out Westlife just yet. The Irish lads have brought in the big guns and are currently in Africa shooting the video for their new single, which has been written by none other than Take That's Gary Barlow and songwriter John Shanks.

Let the battle commence! Who do you think will clinch the top spot? Are you a Westlife or One Direction fan? Use our comment system to tell us.
