Slipknot confirmed as Sonisphere headliners Slipknot have been confirmed as the headline act for the 2011 Sonisphere Festival, being held at Knebworth from Friday July 8 - Sunday July 10.

The summer shows planned by the Iowa band are their first since the death of founding member bass player Paul Gray, who died earlier this year at the age of 38.

The band have toured heavily in the UK since their 1999 debut album. The tour for their most recent release 'All Hope is Gone' brought them to Glasgow's SECC where Shawn 'Clown' Crahan and Chris Fehn spoke to STV. Watch video above.

The band issued a statement saying: "We’re looking forward to spending our summer in Europe.  This tour is about us and our fans.  It’s about celebrating the life of our brother, Paul and his legacy.  The door is neither open nor closed.  This tour is about burning down that door. See you this summer."

It is understood that the band will not be replacing Gray with a new bass player.

The band has previously headlined the Download festival, and follow last year's Sonisphere headliners Alice Cooper, Rammstein and Iron Maiden.

Other acts playing Sonisphere will be confirmed in coming months.
