Under Pressure: the boys have been dropped after just one release Pic: ©ITV
Louis Walsh has confirmed that John and Edward Grimes, aka Jedward, have been dropped from the Sony Music label.
The news that the former X Factor contestants had lost their deal with the company emerged today, just weeks after they failed to secure the number one spot in the charts with their hit, Under Pressure (Ice Ice Baby).
And their mentor Louis Walsh has released a statement saying that he is now talking to a “major record label” about securing a new deal for them.
He said: "I'm completely committed to Jedward and I know they still have a great career ahead of them, the boys have a sell out tour in Ireland that they start straight after The X Factor Tour in April and I am in talks with a major record label about a new deal for them.”
Following their stint on the show, the boys shot to overnight fame, with fans queuing up to see them perform at events after leaving X Factor. Check out the massive crowd that turned up to see Jedward in Glasgow in November.
But it seems that bosses at Sony have not been impressed with their efforts so far and have chosen to drop them over fears their future releases may fail to set the charts alight.
A Sony insider reportedly told The Sun: “We tried our best to make the lads credible recording artists but punters just weren't that bothered." The source continued: "They are great lads but haven't got the greatest voices, so they're something to see rather than listen to.
"Record companies are going through major upheaval so we have to be very careful what we throw our weight behind. I'm sure Jedward will be able to make a buck touring as a novelty act."
John and Edward have not confirmed the news on their Twitter account as yet, but the boys have made regular tweets telling their fans how much they mean to them, including “we are the biggest fans of our fans” and “we have the best fans in the world!”
