Scots singer Amy MacDonald has spoken about her disappointment in the way Pete Doherty has “squandered” his talent.
The 22-year-old star was speaking to stv.tv before the release of her new album, A Curious Thing, which is out today (March 8), and was revealing where her inspiration comes from.
And although at one time Amy did look up to Doherty, she said that she doesn’t have any interest in the troubled star, and prefers to “steer clear” of his “sordid” way of life.
Speaking about the song Poison Prince, which she wrote about the singer for her last album This is the Life, Amy told stv.tv’s Gill Harvey: “Poison Prince was a song about Pete Doherty. It’s something I wrote so long ago now, I was probably about 16 when in wrote that song so it was a long time ago now.
“He’s somebody that doesn’t really inspire me at all anymore. I loved the band The Libertines, but I don’t really have any interest in him and his sordid life, I try and steer clear of that."
Amy added: “Because I was such a fan of The Libertines, it was hard to watch someone you look up to and think ‘gosh, there’s a lot of talent there, they could go on to do something really amazing’, and to just watch it being squandered away, it was quite difficult.”
However, the singer-songwriter, who has been on the scene since she was a teenager, and is still only 22-years-old, had some advice of her own for young people trying to make it in the music industry.
“If its something they want to do and something they’re passionate about then just go for it,” Amy said. “People need to be aware that it’s difficult, and it’s not just plain sailing, and it isn’t a glamorous lifestyle - in fact it’s the complete opposite - but if somebody’s passionate about music then just get out and play gigs and write songs and hopefully some opportunities will come their way.”
