Susan Boyle recording her part on the charity single
Non-music retailers including House of Fraser, Marks & Spencer, BHS, Oxfam and BP Connect/BP Express have given their support to the Haiti campaign, by stocking copies of Everybody Hurts in their stores.
The charity single, which features 21 stars, including Susan Boyle, Mariah Carey and Rod Stewart, hit the shelves of the stores yesterday, to raise money for the disaster-struck country.
Speaking about the decision to sell the single in Marks & Spencer stores, chairman of the company, Sir Stuart Rose, said: "The challenges faced by the people of Haiti in the wake of last month's devastating earthquake are enormous.
“We are proud to be stocking this record and will be donating all profits generated by its sale to the relief effort. We urge all our customers to buy a copy and in doing so help to rebuild the lives of thousands of people."
The single, a re-working of the REM classic, has already topped the download charts after more than a million sales.
Haiti was hit by a massive earthquake on January 12, measuring 7 on the richter scale. Millions of people were hurt in the tragedy, and around 250,000 are thought to have been killed.
Music mogul Simon Cowell quickly got to work, getting music stars from around the world involved in recording the charity single.
Profit will be split equally between the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) and The Sun’s Helping Haiti appeal.Prime Minister Gordon Brown has also pledged to waive VAT on the single, and REM have donated their royalties to the cause.
