It’s been another strong year for female singer-songwriters, so there’s no shortage of acts to choose from for the British Female Solo Artist category.

Florence and the Machine has had an amazing year since she won the Critics’ Choice Award in 2009 - which if nothing else must be encouraging for Ellie Goulding, who’s won that accolade this year... So, will the BRITs have the love for Florence again this year?

Bat for Lashes shares some similarities with Flo in having a fierce independence and intense spirituality to her work - plus some might say the influence of Kate Bush looms large with both artists.

Latest album Two Suns certainly helped her cement her reputation for superb sweeping songs, and also saw her get another Mercury Music Prize nomination.

X Factor winner Leona Lewis always looked liked one of the strongest of its competitors to emerge from the show, and so it has proved, her vocal acrobatics finding fans around the world. It won’t have hurt that she sang on the theme song to a little arthouse film you may have heard of called Avatar...

Lily Allen has become even more of a household name since the release of It’s Not Me, It’s You last February, though perhaps unfortunately the tabloid have concentrated more on her personal life than her singing career. Still, her feisty attitude has seen her become an icon to which many other females aspire, however much the Daily Mail might frown on that...

Newest to the bunch is pop starlet Pixie Lott. Bright-eyed and bushy tailed she’s sparked some life into the charts, so can she cap off her success so far with a coveted BRIT Award?

Nominees:

  • Bat for Lashes
  • Florence and the Machine
  • Leona Lewis
  • Lily Allen
  • Pixie Lott
