Susan Boyle has told fans that she first heard Cry Me A River on a Scottish detective show. The song was the theme tune to Scottish Television’s McCallum, which aired in the mid-1990s and was one of the singer’s favourite programmes.
Susan recorded her own version of the blues ballad for a charity CD in 1999 and has returned to the song for her debut album, which is released on November 23. The album, I Dreamed a Dream, has already broken the record for the number of advance copies sold.
The singer, from Blackburn, Lothian, revealed the inspiration for her stunning cover version when answering fans’ questions on her official website.
Asked what television she enjoyed, Susan revealed that one of her favourite programmes had given her a song that helped make her name.
“The tv shows I watch are a mixture really,” she said “Some of them are comedy and some of them are quite serious.”
“There was one show I used to watch years ago, and this is where I got Cry Me a River from, a show called McCallum. It was a detective show.”
McCallum was broadcast from 1995 to 1998 and starred John Hannah as Dr Iain McCallum, a forensic pathologist who solved murders.
The version of Cry Me A River that was used as the show’s theme music and inspired Susan was recorded by Mari Wilson. Wilson reached number 27 in the UK charts with her cover of the song in 1982.
