Former Pulp frontman turned solo artist Jarvis Cocker says he’s delighted to be receiving an honorary degree from Sheffield Hallam University.
The Britpop icon said: "It is great to receive an honorary doctorate from a university in my home town, and the fact that I have also studied at the University makes it extra special."
Cocker who will pick up the award in his home town next month was described by the university as "one of Sheffield's best loved musical sons".
The 46 year-old singer credits his time spent at the former Sheffield Polytechnic on an access course before gaining a place at St Martins College, London in 1988 for kickstarting his musical career.
It was while attending Sheffield the struggling student got his big break after he handed over a Pulp demo to influential Radio 1 DJ John Peel. Peel then offered the band a session on Radio 1.
Cocker who recently played the European festival circuit promoting his album Further Complications has written three songs for the upcoming film Get Him to the Greek a spinoff of the hit 2008 comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall The songs would be performed by Russell Brand's character Aldous Snow, a hapless rock star who is about to open a huge tour at Los Angeles' Greek Theatre.
The Judd Apatow-produced film, which also stars Jonah Hill and Rose Byrne, is expected to be out in 2010.
