American Idol: Adam Lambert, Kris Allen… or Susan Boyle?

The season finale of American Idol is upon us, and tonight, America will vote for who they want to be their leading man in pop.

In case you have been oblivious to Twitter, Facebook or any other social networking site that has gone mad for the Idol final, Adam Lambert and Kris Allen are the pair who will go head to head for the title.

Adam is the glam rocking favourite. He looks a little like Pete Wentz (Mr Ashlee Simpson) from Fall Out Boy and the American audiences have lapped up his eyeliner and edgier rock boy look.

On the safe, all American-boy side, we have Kris Allen from Arkansas. The kind of boy you could take home to your mother (if he wasn’t already married) and who wouldn’t look out of place playing Zac Efron’s older brother in High School Musical.

So who will take the title and have to sing the emmm ‘interesting’ composition that has been written for the winner be new judge Kara DioGuardi, entitled No Boundaries. Some would say a more appropriate title may have been No Tune

We will find out tonight.

But is the world as excited about this final, as they seem to be for the Britain’s Got Talent final, taking place a week on Saturday?

Indeed, we don’t even know if Susan Boyle will go through yet and already people are planning Britain’s Got Talent final parties and scouring the internet to buy ‘Vote Boyle’ t-shirts.

Although American Idol is still the most popular show in US television, it’s viewing figures have gone down, with the opening show dropping 10% from the year before to just to 30.1 million.

Britain’s Got Talent on the other hand has done incredibly well in the ratings, beating Doctor Who in the Easter weekend battle and Eurovision last Saturday. Boyle’s performance alone has become the most watched clip ever on Youtube.

Britain's Got Talent judge Piers Morgan has said that he believes that Boylemania will cause America to "grind to a halt."

The former newspaper editor wrote on his official blog that he thinks that viewers in the US will be glued to their TV screens throughout the live finals of the talent show.

Piers wrote: "I don't think any talent show in the history of television has had more global impact than this series of BGT. And it's all down to one middle-aged lady from Scotland.

"I've been working in America the last three weeks, and everywhere I've gone, from Seattle to New York,  Houston to Los Angeles, I have had to run the Susan Boyle gauntlet when I walk the streets.

"And I mean gauntlet. Literally one in five people have stopped me to ask about Susan. She has become one of the biggest celebrities in America, and when the live shows start next week, the world's No1 superpower will just grind to a halt!

It seems America’s original idol herself, Oprah Winfrey summed it up when interviewing Susan Boyle and Simon Cowell, by saying that Boyle’s next round on BGT “could be the most watched television broadcast ever.”

Good luck tonight boys!
