Steve “Lips” Kudlow and Robb Reiner are rock band Anvil, the subject of a new documentary Anvil! The Story of Anvil, directed by The Terminal writer Sacha Gervasi.
The heavy metal band that inspired the likes of Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax, never quite achieved the success of their contemporaries and gradually fell by the wayside into middle age and day jobs.
The documentary, which will screen at this year’s Glasgow Film Festival, follows the band in a last-ditch quest for the stardom they never had.
The band admitted they were overwhelmed when they learned the film was to be made: “I burst out crying...it was unbelievable,” said Lips.
Despite the initial excitement, the band admits to having their doubts about the film's success. Having never made it big on the stage, why would anything be different on the screen?
“Who knows Anvil, let alone who is going to care about us two guys? After I saw the final cut, I was blown away,” said Reiner.
The film shows Anvil as they attempt one more tour, while also reflecting on the days gone by and the possibilities of what could have been.
Anvil! The Story of Anvil is screening as part of the Glasgow Film Festival at Cineworld on February 13 and 14.
