A short guide on what to expect at this year’s film festival. Full programme will be featured from 21 January onwards.
Opening and Closing Gala
We can’t tell you just yet what this year’s films will be; only that one will have a strong Scottish connection and the other is a major Hollywood film.
Viva Mexico!
Glasgow Film Festival’s special focus on an individual country reveals the wealth of talent in Mexico. It will include some of the brightest and best Mexican filmmakers set to follow in the footsteps of Alfonso Cuaron and Guillermo Del Toro. Supported by the Instituto Mexicano de Cinematografia they will screen a range of features and documentaries that reveal a wealth of talent including new films from La Zona director Rodrigo Pla.
Retrospective: Audrey Hepburn
This beloved and enduringly popular icon, who would have celebrated her 80th birthday this year, will be represented with screenings of her classic films, spanning her career from her Oscar-winning turn in Roman Holiday to one of her final roles opposite Sean Connery in Robin And Marian.
Errol Flynn Centenary
Glasgow Film Festival continues the tradition of marking the 100th birthday of some of cinema's greats and will, this year, be celebrating the 100th birthday of one Errol Flynn. The festival will show two of his most famous films: Captain Blood and The Adventures Of Robin Hood.
Frightfest
Frightfest returns, with enough gore, scares, spooks and screams to fill a weekend. Watch this space.
Shorts Film Festival
For those with short attention spans there’s the Shorts Film Festival, curated by The Magic Lantern and an inspiring celebration of all that is good and exciting about short filmmaking. The best new short and artists’ film and video from around the world accompanied by workshops, directors, Q&As and more.
Glasgow Youth Film Festival
The Glasgow Schools Film Festival comes of age this year with the new title of Glasgow Youth Film Festival and ambitious plans for workshops and interactive events aimed at capturing the imagination of young film fans and future filmmakers.
