The new cinema year is set to see a batch of brilliant new movies battling it out for glory in the upcoming awards season.

First up is The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which already has five Golden Globe nominations and won rave reviews from across the pond.

The F. Scott Fitzgerald adaptation stars Brad Pitt as a man who is born in his eighties and ages backwards, and is reliant on some amazing special effects to tell the heart-breaking tale, which also features Cate Blanchett and is directed by Zodiac’s David Fincher.

Then there’s Doubt, which centres on a nun who grows suspicious when a priest begins taking too much interest in the life of a young black student.

Its heavyweight subject matter is tackled by the formidable acting duo of Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman, and both have been nominated for Golden Globes for their sure-to-be top-drawer performances. Watch Doubt trailer

Then there’s Revolutionary Road, coming courtesy of American Beauty director Sam Mendes. It stars his wife Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio - teaming up again for the first time since Titanic - as a young couple living in a Connecticut suburb during the mid-1950s, who are struggling to come to terms with their personal problems. For those subsequently searching for some light relief, this summer sees the release of the rebooted Star Trek, which has been made under the guidance of Lost guru JJ Abrams.

Oh, and there’s also Angels and Demons, the prequel/sequel to The Da Vinci Code, which again features Tom Hanks and the mysterious Illuminati and is one for all the conspiracy theorists out there... Watch Angels and Demons trailer
